Spectator causes Rowney crash at Drentse 8
As Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle-Honda) was raising he arms in celebration of Molecaten Drentse 8 van Westerveld victory, Loren Rowney (Velocio-SRAM) was on the ground wondering what caused her to crash just metres from the line. The 26-year-old was sprinting on the left-hand side of the road, close to the barriers, when a spectator shot his arm out and caught her bars causing her to fall.
Rowney rolled over the line through the momentum of the crash, briefly sitting up then clutching her right collarbone before being helped off the road as the peloton was coming into sight. A broken collarbone was confirmed for Rowney, ruling her out of the first women's World Cup of the year, Boels Rental Ronde van Drenthe, which takes place Saturday.
"Thank you 4 the well wishes everybody. I'll try and get back to you all...it's hard with 1 arm! on my way to Hamburg for treatment," Rowney tweeted after the race.
The race organiser, Femmy van Issum, stated that an investigation into the cause of the crash has been opened but was not suggesting it was a deliberate act by the spectator.
"I do not think there was intentionally. Nobody does such a thing on purpose, but I would like to get in touch with the person who has put his hand out. That way we can work out the insurance for Rowney. She is still a while off and female cyclists are simply not as well paid as men," says Van Issum.

My Story: I crashed spectacularly at Drentse 8 by Loren Rowney
...
I’m aware that there are a lot of people discussing the crash – and that many people that watched the footage think it was intentional. I can understand how people think that, but looking at the video, no one can say that with certainty.
If it’s intentional? I would be really concerned. I know there are malicious people in the world. Things like this have happened before where spectators have done things intentionally to cause harm. On our national road course, there was a resident that really hated the fact that cyclists were racing in his hometown. He put tacks on the road, which caused punctures and crashes as a result. There are bad people out there who do that sort of thing.
I really hope that this guy didn’t intentionally grab my handlebar and cause me to crash because that’s assault. There’s a lot of debate and discussions and obviously I’m getting tagged in it all, but I’m focused on surgery and healing. If it was intentional, I really hope they find the guy and there are repercussions for what he did.
What can we do? Can we change it? No. The beauty of our sport is the fact that the fans can get so close to us. It’s such an intimate experience. It’s the nature of the beast that spectator interference can happen
Amid all my anger and confusion and disappointment, my spirits have been kept high by an amazing outpouring of support. The sense of community that I always feel within cycling has been taken to a new level. I’ve had everyone message me, particularly everyone in Girona...
Whatever the reason, it makes me feel lucky in a way. It’s just amazing that the cycling community has been incredible. I’m just so grateful to have such a fantastic network around me. It makes me happy to be a part of it all...
